Reiki and PTSD / Trauma Support
What is Trauma?
Trauma is a response to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. Trauma can result from a single event, such as an accident, assault, bereavement, or natural disaster, or from ongoing experiences such as abuse, neglect, bullying, or chronic stress.
The effects of trauma can impact both physical and emotional wellbeing. Some people may experience anxiety, fear, emotional numbness, difficulty sleeping, low mood, hypervigilance, or feelings of disconnection from themselves and others.
What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While many people recover naturally over time, some continue to experience symptoms that significantly affect daily life.
Common symptoms of PTSD may include:
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories
- Nightmares and disturbed sleep
- Anxiety and panic
- Difficulty concentrating
- Emotional overwhelm or numbness
- Feeling constantly on alert or unsafe
- Avoiding people, places, or situations associated with the trauma
Living with trauma or PTSD can be exhausting, affecting both physical and emotional wellbeing.
Reiki and Trauma Recovery
People who have experienced trauma or live with PTSD can often feel overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, or constantly on alert. Reiki offers a gentle and supportive environment that may help encourage relaxation, calm, and a greater sense of wellbeing.
Reiki is a non-invasive complementary therapy that aims to promote deep relaxation and support the body’s natural ability to restore balance. During a session, clients remain fully clothed while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body in a safe and peaceful setting.
How Reiki May Support Trauma Recovery
Promotes Deep Relaxation
Trauma can leave the nervous system in a heightened state of alertness. Reiki may help encourage relaxation and create a sense of calm, allowing the mind and body an opportunity to rest and recharge.
Supports Emotional Wellbeing
Many clients report feeling calmer, lighter, and more emotionally balanced following Reiki sessions. Reiki may provide a gentle space for emotional release and self-reflection.
May Help Reduce Stress and Anxiety
The deeply relaxing nature of Reiki may help support emotional resilience and enhance an individual’s ability to cope with everyday stress.
Complements Other Forms of Support
Reiki can be used alongside counselling, psychotherapy, mindfulness practices, and conventional healthcare as part of a holistic approach to wellbeing.
Encourages a Sense of Safety and Grounding
Reiki provides a quiet and supportive space that may help individuals reconnect with themselves and feel more present in the moment.
May Help Improve Sleep
Difficulty sleeping is common following traumatic experiences. The relaxing nature of Reiki may help support more restful sleep and overall wellbeing.
Supports Self-Care and Recovery
Regular Reiki sessions can provide valuable time for relaxation, reflection, and personal wellbeing as part of a holistic self-care routine.
